Customer: The nation’s #1 department store chain has adopted the name of its most famous brand and cash cow: Macy’s. Macy’s, Inc. (formerly Federated Department Stores) operates 800-plus stores in 45 states and rings up more than $26 billion in annual sales. The name change comes on the heels of its acquisition of rival May Department Stores in 2005. The retail giant operates four regional divisions: Macy’s East, Macy’s Central, Macy’s Florida, and Macy’s West, and the upscale Bloomingdale’s chain. The department stores sell men’s, women’s, and children’s apparel and accessories, cosmetics, and home furnishings (including the Martha Stewart Collection), among other things. Macy’s began as a dry goods store 150 years ago.
Project & Lighting Challenge: Macy’s Inc. Herald Square location is the most famous department store location in the world and entertains the most visitors per year due to its fame and prime mid-town Manhattan location. The famed store is set to be renovated and modernized from 2008 through 2010. Phoster was asked to develop an LED lighting system that would replace the originally planned halogen down light system. Phoster’s LED system had to equal the light quality of the halogen system while dramatically reducing energy consumption, eliminating maintenance and fit seamlessly into the the store’s existing control and power requirements.
Sub-Challenges
- Energy Savings accomplished –> the energy consumption has been reduced by 85%
- All maintenance and lamp replacement costs have been eliminated to date (Nov. 2008), at 12 hour per day on-time the lights have been on for over 8,000 hours
- Maintained the light quality and retained aesthetic beauty of the department and its retail contents –> 1st quarter after renovation completion, the beddings department sales increased by over 30%
- Eliminated all inventory erosion with LED lights containing no UV and efficiently managed thermal dissipation.
